On March 16, 2023, I spent a glorious day at the Art Institute in Chicago checking out their Dali exhibit for part of the day. There were 26 works in the exhibit (a few of which I’d seen before between what is already in the Art Institute and the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg) plus past exhibition catalogs from around the world, the edition of Time magazine where he appeared on the cover, his “Declaration of the Independence of the Imagination and the Rights of Man to His Own Madness” which I think should be on a t-shirt, plus other Dali goodies.
The main point of the exhibition was to highlight Dali’s paranoiac-critical method. While all the works displayed this technique, the most prominent work is Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach. Another great example of this technique is part of the Dali Museum permanent collection is Disappearing Bust of Voltaire.
The exhibition continues at the Art Institute until June 12, so you still have some time to check it out the next time you’re in Chicago. Plus, you’re at the Art Institute in Chicago – one of the best museums in the world!
