Georgia O’Keeffe’s “My New Yorks”

If you think Georgia O’Keeffee only painted flowers & southwest motifs, you have until September 22, 2024 to educate yourself otherwise by visiting this great exhibit. Bittersweetly, this exhibit was the one that my friend, Kevin, and I were planning to see; please see my tribute to him in a recent blog. It took me around 90 minutes to see the exhibit. If Kevin had been with me, we might not have left the room because he would’ve been gobsmacked!

Georgia O’Keeffe  and her husband photographer Alfred Stiglitz lived in New York City for the first years of their marriage. The exhibit at the Art Institution demonstrates that the expansive outlook & outcomes in O’Keeffe’s work can be applied to a crowded city simply by observing light patterns, shadows, color changes, etc. Two works especially stood out to me - City Night and a drawing of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Some of Stiglitz’s early photographs of Georgia are also part of the exhibit; here are a couple.

AND, if you didn’t know this before, you’ll know now, Georgie O’Keeffe & the Art Institute have a long history together!

Again, if you can get to the Art Institute in Chicago before September 22, you owe it to yourself to check out this glorious exhibit.
